Highland Sojourn: Day 14 ~ Moray Golf Club
Lossiemouth Golf Day
Up this morning and straight to the coffee at the Co-op mini mart on the way through Forres and then on up the road to Lossiemouth, arriving just before my 10:40 tee time.
Checked in at the pro shop, rolled a few putts on the practice green, and then stepped up to the first tee. The golf course sits out on a point of land and was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris. There are two courses here—the Old Course, which is the better known and more highly regarded, and the New Course alongside it. The setting is magnificent though, right out on the Moray Firth, and I’m sure the New Course would be a fine walk as well.
The wind today was coming out of the northwest, making the front nine a bit of a challenge. Several of the par fours were playing more like par fives with a steady 10–15 mph breeze right in the face. Once making the turn and heading back in, things eased up a bit and I managed to hold it together.
Finished the day with a 78, seven over par, which felt like a respectable score in those conditions.
After loading the clubs back into the car, I settled into the clubhouse overlooking the course and the sea. Ordered a sausage roll with beans and chips along with a half-pint of lager—simple fare but perfect after a walk around the links.
From there it was back through Forres where I stopped at Tesco to pick up provisions for tomorrow’s fishing, followed by an afternoon coffee before making the short drive back to Nairn.
Dinner tonight at the restaurant here at the Newton was excellent. Started with mushrooms and garlic on toasted ciabatta, followed by salmon with peas and mashed potatoes. All quite good.
Spent the rest of the evening getting caught up on blog posts, and now shutting things down for the night.
Fishing the River Oich tomorrow. Early start—meeting David at his house at 7:00 AM.
