Highland Sojourn: Day 12 ~ Nairn Dunbar Golf Club

Nairn – Reset Day and an Afternoon Round

Used the morning today to recalibrate a bit. I pulled all the fishing and golf gear out of the car, cleaned out the trash, and found a wheelie bin to deposit it in. Repacked everything neatly and gave the car a proper reset. Did a bit of laundry up in the room as well—washed a few things in the sink and hung them on the shower rod to dry. Simple travel routines, but they make a difference.

Late morning I wandered over to Nairn Dunbar Golf Club for some lunch and arranged a 2:28 PM tee time.

The weather had that classic Highland feel—mid-50s, a steady breeze out of the northeast around 10 mph with a few stronger gusts rolling through.

When I walked down to the first tee a member couple, Ian and Alex Fraser, were preparing to go off and kindly asked if I’d like to join them. I gladly accepted. Ian is a local businessman now retired, and he and Alex are both keen golfers who travel abroad frequently with a group of friends. They were a joy to spend the afternoon with.

The front nine was a proper test. Nearly every hole played into that northeast wind, and several of the par fours stretched past 400 yards, which for me meant they effectively played like par fives from the middle tees.

Things finally clicked on the 10th tee. With the wind now helping, I launched a drive about 255 yards down the middle of the fairway, and from there my swing seemed to settle in. The back nine treated me much better and I managed to finish the round strong for a final score of 82.

Given the conditions, I was quite satisfied with that result.

After the round Ian asked how long I would be in the area. When I told him I had several more days in Nairn, he kindly invited me to join him and a few of his golfing friends on Wednesday morning at the championship course at Nairn Golf Club—the same course I played earlier in the trip.

We exchanged details, and I’ve agreed to give him a call Tuesday to confirm. As it stands now, we’re looking at a 9:00 AM tee time.

Another unexpected pleasure of traveling—good golf, good company, and the sort of invitation that reminds you how welcoming these places can be
